About me

5riversmeAbout me:

At every point during my life, there have been gardens: big gardens, little gardens, houseplant gardens. I have worked in greenhouses. I have done vegetable gardens, pretty flowering gardens, and green foliage gardens. I have harvested, cooked, froze, canned, and shared lots of garden fruits and vegetables. I have planted peas in February, and run out to the garden to get herbs for the dinner I was cooking

A funny story about my mother, she was having a birthday party for one of us four kids, and to escape the noise, she was in the garden during a rain storm: she hated gardening! My love for it must not be genetic.

At the age of 50, I returned to school to learn landscape design, a four year program I was able to squeeze into two years, in part by using the credits from a previous college degree. Running across a big field during my first semester in total joy, of course I found a gofer hole and sprained my ankle, but it did not slow my enthusiasm any. It was tough learning about bugs and sticks while suffering hot flashes and sleepless nights, but I managed. I was hired as a grounds worker at SUNY Albany, and have designed, planted and maintained many gardens, each with a different little Eco-systems of different soils, sun and climates. I was a volunteer in my children’s greenhouse, and have found one of my greatest pleasures is teaching and helping others with their gardens.
